You won't need wrath of the lich king until about level 70. You do have to buy both expansions. Most gears in the early levels aren't worth much warcraft gold because they bind the moment you pick them up.
About the expansions-Unless you want to make a blood elf or draenei, you don't need the burning crusade until 58-60 when you are ready to go to outlands.
The early instances give decent items but I skipped it because you waste so much time in there which could have been used to level up.
